HOTEL (2000)
A site specific, promenade performance for the empty Midland Hotel in Morecambe with 100 performers including ballroom dancers, flower arrangers and a brass band.
The Midland Hotel on Morecambe sea front is a 1930s art deco masterpiece with sculpture and interior décor by Eric Gill. In its heyday guests such as Noel Coward and Vivian Leigh stayed there but in November 2000 it was damp, empty and in the hands of the receivers.
Hotel was inspired by the stunning architecture of the building, the faded memories of the hotel’s glorious past and the echoes of its former guests. Locked bedroom doors were opened to reveal dream-like images and hidden memories and the ballroom came alive again for one last day.
This iconic building has since been restored to its former glory as the 5 star Midland Hotel.
